Joseph Heller speculates that there was only one possible career path for Major Major Major, who had been christened by his father as a cruel joke. He was definitely onto something there. I just found out that my brother’s friend Basil is a cook. It reminds me of the wardens of Cape Clear Island bird observatory - named Dave Bird, and Steve Wing. Were these guys doomed from birth to become ornithologists?
