Aldi Says No U-18’s
April 30th, 2006
I’m reading this post on boards.ie by a mature 17 year old in Cellbridge who got booted from his local Aldi because of their “children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult” rule. I haven’t seen this rule before, and I am surprised to see it being enforced.
Apparently the issue made it to the Gerry Ryan Show yesterday, with a lot of callers having experienced the same problem. Aldi’s official stance was that because alcohol was openly on display, they were required by law to refuse unaccompanied under 18 year olds from entering the supermarket. Let me think back to what I was doing this time six years ago… ah yes, I was stacking shelves in Super Valu with every other 17 year old in the country - most of whom would go down to the pub afterwards for a few pints!
So at 17, you are legally allowed to quit school. You can drive a vehicle with 8 passengers and a weight of 3,500kg. You could head over to Scotland and get married. If you were clever enough to skip transition year, you might well be living by youself and going to university. But you still have to ring your mammy if you want to avail of Aldi’s latest bargains.
