I’ve just been playing War§ow – a free stand-alone fast-paced “full of trix” FPS running the Quake 2 engine, inspired by QuakeWorld and Q3 CPMA. A new version released today has breathed fresh life into the small but dedicated Warsow community, and inspired many new players like myself to give it a go. The cartoonish graphics can appear off-putting at first, but its easy to get used to them. The game focuses on the “art of movement” more than aim, and thus is closer to CPMA than to QW in design.

A little about the game : free, fast FPS. Based around collecting ammo for your weapons – when you pick up a weapon you are firing weak ammo, you must collect stronger ammo packs to get the most out of each weapon. Weapons may have different damage / slightly different behaviour depending on what ammo you use (for instance: the weak electrobolt (wsws rail) is a high speed projectile, whereas the electrobolt with strong ammo is instant hit.
I doubt I’ll be sticking with it, but I like the fact that its good fun, only 61mb, and free. You can download a Warsow for Linux here and Warsow for Windows here.

I’ll give this a go with u in the near future lads, just sorting out some pc problems the next few days
I played it a little bit more – I like it, but they have a fatal flaw in the weak “railgun” (can’t remember its name in Warsow) delay. There is nothing worse in an fps game than lag on instant weapons, and if you’re used to q3′s railgun, or UT2K4′s lightning gun, or HLDM’s crossbow, or COD’s sniper rifle, then you will expect your “railgun” to fire instantly and you will be pissed off when it doesn’t
I know its part of the game and its something you can get used to, but if I have strong ammo and my railgun fires instantly, and then I die and have weak ammo and my railgun fires with a delay, it will frustrate me too much. I would much prefer the power of the weapon to be weakened instead.
well thats the Painkiller influence. The stakegun which was the spawning weapon had a delay, but yet could kill with 1 shot so people got very accurate with it. Changing from low ammo to high ammo must be a pain in the arse.
Ya thats what I’m thinking – I haven’t played enough of Warsow to know for sure, but at least with Painkiller’s stake gun you had a fixed delay and you could get used to it.
myself, vin, liquid and drak played a 2v2 yesterday. I have to say, this is really growing on me. I love the speed.
