Wincing the Night Away

I was so focused on release date that I didn’t notice the Shins have put nearly the entire new album online on MySpace. These guys are the anti-Metallica in more ways than one. The unfamiliar synths and atmospherics indicate that the Shins have deviated from the course that was set by their previous work. I don’t know yet if thats a good thing or a bad thing… I’ll have to listen to it a bit more before deciding, but at the moment I agree with this guy.

I really liked the new album. Change is always (well not always :P ) good in my books. At least they didn’t try and duplicate their last albums. Another album of the same thing would have taken away from them, i think.

I prefer it to chutes too narrow as well. I never really got that album. Its good, just not great.

You know, Sea Legs is one of the diversions mentioned by the above reviewer and I agree it is good. What is better is the addition of new fellow Shin, Eric Johnson, who is one does not remember back that far was the Lead songwriter of Fruit Bats Echolocation which was MOJO’S band of the month back in 2001! He adds depth and plays 7 or 8 instruments in shows I’ve seen.

Oh, and by the way this new American addition to The Shins has some Irish anscestors, or so I am told.
