A very unusual film, without the first word of dialogue spoken until 14 and a half minutes in. Not much of a plot, it is all about one thing: the character of Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) – an oil man who becomes consumed by his mean and greedy streak. “I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed. I hate most people.”
As a film overall, it was lacking some of the critical elements that make up a great flick, and deservedly played second fiddle to the superior No Country For Old Men. There Will Be Blood did manage to land two awards (Best Actor, Cinematography), and to say Day-Lewis deserved his would be a huge understatement. Some great scenes, especially the moments involving Eli that make the audience guilty of Daniel’s own admission: “there are times when I look at people and I see nothing worth liking.”

Hello there, just came across your site; I’ve been on the lookout for other Cork bloggers. I agree with you on There Will Be Blood although I think I would give it three stars rather than four. DDL is terrific, no doubt about it but the movie itself was average. And they really overused the music!
My blog is all about movies; if ur interested please pop over and leave a comment! Thanks.
Hi Gem,
Nice site – I will subscribe to that. There are loads of Cork Bloggers around – some of them are aggregated at http://corkblogs.com/ and there’s a bunch of them in Damien Mulley’s sidebar at http://www.mulley.net
You should keep an eye on Louder Voice, a company based in Cork that aggregates reviews – another good way to get the Cork perspective. I will leave a comment, but out of interest – do you not believe in giving movies a rating out of 5 or 10? It’s usually the first thing I look at when reading a review.
Hi James, only spotted ur comment now…That’s great about the corkblogs site. I’ll look that up. And Mulley’s site too. I guess I could do the star rating thing; sometimes I spend a while mulling over a film and I don’t like having to tie myself to a certain rating. But I guess it is true that it’s the first thing people look at. Spotted the Louder Voice link alrite on your site. I didn’t know that it was Cork based; I’ll definetely join that so. There’s so many gadgets to add to blogs these days; I’ve been trying to choose the best of the lot and the ones most suited to my site.
finally got to see the infamous There Will Be Blood… Daniel-Day Lewis’ performance was top-notch. He takes well to the overbearing, violent father-figure role — he also did this in Gangs of New York.
Agreed, he was great in Gangs of New York too. The Butcher… good character.
