If you’re an Apple fanboy like me, you have waited all this time for the iPhone to arrive. Not a dirty hacked iPhone, but the real deal. It comes courtesy of O2, as expected. You check the price tag and see that they are not bumping up the price of the phone significantly compared to in the UK, surprisingly. Good stuff. Then you see the Paddy tax. Rip-off Ireland lives on in O2′s call charges. I think I might take Pat up on that bus to the north to get an unlocked iPhone.

There really seems to be something wrong about the whole iPhone marketing thing. I don’t know if it’s Apple, or just greed on the part of the telco’s. But it’s wrong.
If you compare the tariff to other Irish network tariffs, it’s not actually that bad.
Yes it would be nice to have as many inclusive minutes and texts as they get in the UK for a similar price, but why should they provide that just because it’s for an iPhone when they don’t provide it normally?
The only thing that strikes me as completely ludicrous is the way you only get 1gb inclusive usage even if you pay €100 per month. You’d think they’d up it for the top tariff.
Good point Brad. It is testament to the fact that we are being ripped off across the board by the mobile providers in Ireland. Still, iPhone is such a high profile launch here that this is a good place to finally stand and fight.
Yeah. But I //really// want an iPhone, and not have to worry about updates bricking it!
this is just another nail in the coffin, Im blue in the face complaing about pricing is this country and its down to one person, berty. Competition in the market place… my arse. Id move back to England but its full of british people.
Get an Ipod touch instead and keep yer oul phone! Thats what I’ve done! That said 2 gadgets in the pocket can be a pain at times!
So have u went out and bought one? Im in the same boat. Love everything Apple have everything Apple and i don’t want to see Sum Bags walking around Cork with them and me not having one. But the cost of the contracts are just stupid. I am going to the states in a few mths and i think i will pick one up there and just deal with the hassle of updates, As long as u know what u are doing its not that much of a hassle managing it,
I didn’t get one yet, Pat Phelan and others put forward a case that is too convincing – the iPhone on o2 is quite simply a rip off. I think I will go that route also – buying one in the states, unlocking it, putting it on meteor, and dealing with the updates as they come.
