‘Holiday 2006′?

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

Paddy linked me to Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X page the other day. I have no interest in flight simulators, but what caught my eye was the release date: ‘Holiday 2006′. Which holiday? I was in school in America in the late 80’s so I remember when Christmas was phased out and replaced by Xmas and/or ‘the Holiday Season’. If people would rather have Xmas holidays than Christmas holidays, due to their religious beliefs, thats fine by me. But where did ‘holiday 2006′ spring out of?

Its more than just Microsoft Flight Sim X with an ETA of holiday 2006: Ubisoft announces new rayman for holiday 2006. For better or for worse, Shrek 3 is due in holiday 2006. Natick Mall hopes to have its mall-wide renovations finished by holiday 2006.

I assumed that this was an idiom confined to the land of aluminum and favorite colors, and as they tend to use the word ‘vacation’ instead of ‘holiday’, its fair enough that they would opt to find another use for the redundant term. That is until ‘British Gaming; pointed out that the PS3 is delayed until holiday 2006. When did this creep into use? I’m all for the evolution of a language, but this one just irritates me.
